Clandestine Demodulators

FREE 1.5 Day Electronic workshop / Ioana Vreme Moser

During this workshop, we explored the history of Radio transmission and reception to create a series of inconspicuous instruments. By demodulation we understand the separation of the original signal from the carrier, the disclosure of sound through the means of a crystal. We will explore this technology to understand better how a communication network can be reinforced with simple materials. Inspired by the history of clandestine receivers we constructed radio receivers and embed the circuits into mundane objects. The participants brought personal objects that were transformed into demodulating gizmos.

How many: 15 max. Participants

 

Level required: None, this workshop is addressed to beginners.

 

Topics/skills covered in the workshop:

Radio technology, history of clandestine reception and radio jamming, soldering, manual work, and improvisation.

 

What do participants need to bring:

Headphones and a domestic object to place the clandestine demodulator in, such an object can be: a hat, an umbrella, a teapot, textile piece, jars, books, etc. Further instructions will be given vie email to the participants.

4-6: Theoretical introduction and preparations

7-9: Introduction to the circuit and soldering.

2-4: Building the electronic circuit

5-7: Placing the circuits into custom enclosures

8-9: Sound walk - capturing signals together

Ioana Vreme Moser

is a Romanian transmedia narrator and a sound artist engaged with hardware electronics, speculative research and DIY experimentation. She places electronic components and control voltages in different situations of interaction with organic materials, lost and found items and environmental stimuli. Her works are dominated by technological artifacts, bits and pieces of garbage, intimate objects and low-tech that resound in diagrams, installations, sound-sculptures, hand-made instruments or sound-performance setups.
